Building a Culture of Philanthropy: Advancing Universities Through Strategic Fundraising
Richard Tollefson established The Phoenix Philanthropy Group in 2004. Under his leadership, Phoenix Philanthropy, an internationally respected philanthropic consulting firm, has raised funds and empowered nonprofit organizations, foundations, and donors in 39 countries worldwide. The firm’s 20-member team has helped nearly 250 clients collectively raise more than $16 billion in philanthropic support.
Before founding Phoenix Philanthropy, Richard served as vice president for institutional advancement at the Thunderbird School of Global Management. During his tenure, he raised $120 million in 26 countries and transformed Thunderbird’s alumni association into a global professional association.
Richard has also served on the Boards of Directors of Social Venture Partners International, Social Venture Partners Arizona, The Giving Institute, Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VII, Industry Advisory Council, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater Arizona. He serves on the Advisory Council for the Arizona Community Foundation’s Kellenberger + Tollefson Center for LGBTQ Philanthropy.
